English Speakers in Action began in 1992 with the purpose of making foreigners living in Hermosillo feel welcome in Mexico and make their stay a lot more interesting by providing a means to make new friends. ESIA members are of many different nationalities, sharing a language in common. Some members of the group have been in Mexico for more than 30 years.

The group meets the second Thursday of each month September through June. We have an active social calendar, including Cooking Classes, Playgroup, Scrapbooking get-togethers, Ladies’ Night Out and seasonal events such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties. We regularly make collections for an orphanage in town (Ciudad de los Ninos) and hold a Christmas party for the children at the orphange each year.

ESIA members are a great source of information on living in Hermosillo and often become lifelong friends. If you would like information about ESIA or living in Hermosillo, please email us on esiahermosillo [at] yahoo.com.

Our activities

Monthly Meetings – a chance to catch up and talk about upcoming ESIA events and things to do in Hermosillo. We sometimes have guest speakers talking about topics of interest.

Social Functions – we have regular social outings for the members, their partners and families. We organise seasonal events for Halloween (Trunk or Treat), Christmas (our December meeting is a Christmas party with secret gift and cookie exchange and carols) and Easter (an Easter egg hunt for the kids). We also have an Icecream Social (a family event with an excuse to eat ice-cream!) and an end of year Carne Asada (grilled meat that is the speciality of this region) in June. In addition to these major events we have regular coffee mornings, movie nights and “Ladies Night Out”.

Cooking Class – Cooking get-togethers are held once a month, hosted by a member in their house. This is an informal cooking club where members share their favourite recipes. Members usually prepare the food in advance and the ladies can sample and discuss the recipe at the class.

Activities – Many of our members are keen scrapbookers and meet regularly to exchange ideas, work on their albums and chat. The mothers of young children meet weekly for playgroup, usually held at a member’s house.
